Aims of Faculty:
The aims of the faculty are:
> Encourage the medical students to join the field of psychiatry.
> Fulfill the unmet needs of the psychiatric care.
> Reduce stigma against the patients with psychiatric illness, their care givers and families as well as against the professionals belonging to the psychiatric profession.
> Protect the legal and human rights of patients with mental illness.
> Promote good medical / psychiatric practice.
> Formulation of strategies to ensure provision and promotion of appropriate psychiatric services in the Hospital and community education and incorporation of the local administrative authorities, Volunteers and NGOs.
> Implementation of mental health act to protect the rights of the patients and psychiatric health professionals.
> Increase the number of psychiatrists after teaching and training postgraduate trainees.
> Continuing medical educaion programs to upgrade the knowledge of the health professionals with the recent advances.
> Continuing research to improve the quality care of the psychiatric patients.
Role In Hospital/ SIMS:
To achieve the above mentioned aims we are
> Looking after in/out patients ensuring good psychiatric practice by using multidisciplinary approach.
> Devising the promotional strategies of mental health issues and their rectification.
> Teaching and training the undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees in psychiatry.
> Keeping liaison with other medical / surgical departments of this Hospital to provide appropriate psychiatric care.
> Watching the interests of the Hospital without comprising the quality care of the patients.
Recent Research:
Currently the following research projects are in progress.
> In collaboration with the DMC collecting data for evaluating pstchiatric morbidity in diabetic patients presening to DMC.
> Validating a psychiatric instrument to screen the patients with Bipolar Affective Disorder in our culture.
> Collecting the data to evaluate he frequency of psychiatric morbidities of patients admitted in the department of psychiatry of this Hospital.
> Collecting data of a research project to assess the perception of young psychiatric patients about the attitude of their parents.
> Similarly in another study collecting data to assess the perception of old aged psychiatric patients about attitude of their children.
Following are the dissertation projects of our FCPS-II trainees:
> Quality of life of patients suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
> Frequency of depression in children presenting to child psychiatric OPD.
> Prevalence of history of sexual abuse in patients presenting with conversion disorder.
> Prevalence of psychiatric morbidity during all the three trimesters of pregnant women.
