Recent Research:
As part of requirements for Part-II FCPS the trainees are required to submit a dissertation which is a research document. Close supervision is in place to ensure practice of genuine research methodology as prescribed by college of physicians & Surgeons Pakistan.Many papers have been published in the national journals.
Other Information:
> Since 1987, annual postgraduate courses for FCPS / MRCOG Part-II candidates is organized in our Unit for 3-4 weeks duration in the months of january / February.The last course , the 18th, was attended by 75 participants from throughout the country.
> We organized a conference on Reproductive Health in April 2004 in which more than 800 delegates from all over Pakistan and south asian countries participated.
> Community oriented project with a view to providing Emergency Obstetric Care in District Kasur was carried out under the auspices of FIGO(International Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecology).
> Currently a project is being run in collaboration with UNICEF to train health personnel in extending Obstetric Care and creating awareness amongst rural population regarding utilization of health facilities.

Aims of Faculty:
The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Unit III is involved in the training and teaching programme of undergraduate and postgraduate students, carried out according to the guidelines by University of Health Science (UHS) and College of Physicians and surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP).
The Undergraduate Programme consists of:
> Lectures on topics of Obstetrics Gynaecology as defined in the MBBS syllabus.
> Ward demonstrations and classes on clinical methods.
> Maternity duties in labour ward.
The postgraduate training and teaching programme consists of the following.The house surgeons also participate in the peogramme with greater emphasis on the basic skills and teaching.
Daily Schedule:
> Morning meeting at 8:30 AM.
> Ward round with clinical demonstration.
> Labour ward management on emergency and non-emergency days.
Bi-Weekly:
> Clinical case presentations in the ward and OPD.
> Lectures / Presentations.
> Journal club meetings.
> Written tests and discussion of short essay questions.
> TOACS practice.
> Demonstration of operative procedures in OT.
Monthly:
> Clinico-Pathological conference (CPC).
> Perinatal Mortality Meeting in collaboration with paediatrics Department.
> Departmental Statistical Meeting / Maternal Mortality Meeting.
Role In Hospital/ SIMS:
The Unit is involved in the care and management of patients seen in the OPD,Presenting in the Labour Ward and admitted in indoor wards.Major and minor surgical procedures are performed on the patients on operation lists and in emergency.
The unit has the following working days.
Outdoor Days = Two days / Week (Wednesday & Saturday).
Emergency Days = Three or Four Days / Week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday).
Operation Days = Two days / Week (Tuesday & Friday).
Ward / Academics Days = Two Days / Week (Monday & Thursday).
The undergraduates observe or work under-suspervision and the postgraduates perform their duties under-supervision initially and then independently.
Recent Research:
Currently research on the following topics is being conducted in Unit Three for thesis by the MS students and by FCPS part two trainees.
> Predictive value of Biophysical profile in high risk pregnancy.
> The management of tubal pregnancy with single dose IM Methotrexate at 8 weeks gestation.
> The role of metformin in increasing fertility rates in PCOS along with Clomophene citrate.
> Comparison of effectiveness of Transdermal Nitroglycerine Patch and Salbutamol in the management of preterm labour.
> Dose related effect of misoprostol in induction of labour.
> Labour induction with prostaglandin E2 vaginal tablets in women with one C-section.
> Mid trimester termination of pregnancy with oral versus vaginal misoprostol (Cytotec).
> Oxytocin & multiparity are risk factors of postpartum haemorrhage.
> Iron-Deficiency anaemia in pregnancy and its fetal and maternal outcome.
> Comparison of surgical outcome in patients undergoing abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy.
> Mode of delivery and fetomaternal outcome in abruption placents.
> Maternal and fetal outcome of expectant versus active management in premature rupture of membranes at term.
> Small for gestation age babies (SGA): An assessment of risk factors.

The Unit is constantly involved in the development of programmes and activities to provide further improved and evidence-based care to the patients, updated knowledge, training and opportunities for research to the undergraduates and postgraduates.The ongoing projects consist of:
Laparoscopic Surgery:
Equipment for Laparoscopic surgery has been provided in the operation theatre of Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and would become functional in near future.
Colposcopy:
A Colposcope has been provided for the management of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN).
Clinical Obstetrics & Gynaecological Meetings (COGM):
The Unit Three has taken the initiative to organize Clinical & Gynaecology to provide a forum for the trainees and consultants in the specialty to present and discuss research projects and clinical cases on monthly basis.
